The Christmas season can feel like a lot. Between the endless to-do lists, financial pressures, and the desire to make everything magical for my three kids (10, 7, and 5), it’s easy to feel overstimulated and overwhelmed. Truthfully, it’s not my favorite time of year. But over time, I’ve found simple, affordable ways to bring the magic of the season into our home without getting lost in the stress of it all.
These small, practical traditions help me focus on what matters most: creating memories my kids will treasure. Here are a few ideas that have worked wonders for our family of five.
1. A Disco Ball and Mistletoe Moment
This is such a small addition, but it makes a huge impact. I hang a little mistletoe with a mini disco ball from our dining room chandelier, and when the afternoon sun hits it, the room becomes a sparkling wonderland. The kids LOVE it and I think it's beautiful and magical. It’s unexpected, whimsical, and honestly feels so right. It’s also super affordable and doesn’t require a ton of effort—my kind of holiday win!
2. DIY Butterfly Wreath
Traditional red and green have their place, but this wreath brings a bit of magic in a completely unique way. I took a $5 faux wreath from Michael’s and added orange monarch butterflies (also from Michael’s) that are wired for easy wrapping. The result? A fluttering, enchanting wreath that feels festive but different. Credit for this idea goes to Melissa Andre of MADco Events, a luxury event planner I admire.
3. Handmade Ornaments with the Kids
Every year, my kids and I make ornaments as gifts for teachers, neighbors, and friends. We use clear plastic ornaments from Michael’s, have a great time painting them (and sometimes adding glitter if it feels right). I let the kids create their masterpieces which they absolutely love. I always write the year on each one so we can look back at their little creations over time. These ornaments are personal, heartfelt, and a wonderful way to involve the kids in holiday giving.
4. Organized Christmas Bins
Two years ago, I finally tackled my Christmas storage, and it’s been a game-changer. I labeled bins with categories like “Soft Christmas Decor” (stockings, blankets, plushies), “Vintage Ornaments” (heirlooms from my grandparents), and “Mini Christmas Trees” (we use these all over the house). I even made a bin just for the kids with fun, hand-me-down decor that they get to use to decorate their rooms. It’s their favorite tradition, and honestly, it saves me from stressing over their creative messes.
5. Etsy Holiday Prints
One of my favorite recent hacks is downloading affordable holiday prints from Etsy. Most cost under $5, and you can print them at home or through a local shop like Walgreens. I swap out the prints in frames I already own to instantly update our wall art for the season. It’s budget-friendly, chic, and an effortless way to refresh your decor without adding to the clutter.

6. Simplicity Over Stuff
With three kids, a dog, and a small business, our house can get chaotic. I’ve learned to embrace less when it comes to holiday decor. Instead of filling every inch with knick-knacks, I focus on items with sentimental value: vintage pieces from my grandparents, meaningful ornaments, and a few classy staples like gold reindeer on the piano. I love creating a home that feels festive but isn’t overwhelming.
Final Thoughts: Finding Joy in the Little Things
The holidays don’t have to be overcomplicated or stressful to be meaningful. Some of our family’s favorite traditions—like decorating handmade ornaments or dancing under the disco ball light—are simple, inexpensive, and filled with heart. My hope is that these ideas inspire you to add a touch of magic to your home while keeping things practical and enjoyable.
